Craig Carter with his hand to the square taking oath of office

Following a unanimous vote by the Board of Education on the evening of March 10, Craig Carter has been appointed as the business administrator for Alpine School District.

This key leadership transition comes as the district prepares for a landmark reorganization into three new entities: Aspen Peaks, Lake Mountain, and Timpanogos School Districts. Carter steps into the role previously held by Jason Sundberg, who was recently named the business administrator for the upcoming Timpanogos School District.

“This is something that’s never been done. I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge.” Carter noted.

As a statutory officer under Utah law, the business administrator reports directly to the school board and serves as the district’s chief financial officer, overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, and accounting controls.

“Craig is steady and he is calm. In times of uncertainty he will be an excellent partner to the superintendent,” said Board Vice President Stacy Bateman. “We are grateful that he is willing to step out of retirement and take on this challenge.”

The Board expressed immense confidence in Carter’s ability to provide stability during this period of change.

Carter’s appointment brings four decades of financial and administrative expertise back to the public sector. He is widely recognized for his long-standing tenure as the business administrator of Davis School District from 2009 to 2024, a role he held after serving as a director for various departments within that district for over a decade. His professional journey also includes two years as the business administrator for Morgan School District and twelve years in the private sector with the Unisys Corporation. An alumnus of Brigham Young University and the University of South Carolina, Carter’s deep experience in both corporate and educational finance will be a vital asset as the district navigates its final chapters.

The Board anticipates that Carter will remain in this position until Alpine School District officially dissolves on June 30, 2027. Since the November 2024 voter approval to create three new districts, Alpine has been engaged in an intense collaboration with new board members and superintendents to ensure a seamless transition for its 85,000 students. While the district’s structure is evolving, its commitment to its Vision for Learning remains steadfast.

Beyond his professional life, Carter is a devoted husband to his wife, Lisa Spjut Carter, and a proud father and grandfather to 14 grandchildren. As he takes the helm of the district's finances, he joins a century-long legacy of excellence, helping to prepare the community for a future full of new opportunities.
